Exploring the benefits of NT family sponsorship

The Subclass 491/190 Northern Territory Nomination is Northern Territory’s GSM or General Skilled Migration nomination program, which was reopened in July 2024. It offers aspirants a pathway to work and live in the NT. In other words, you can secure a Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa or the Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional Provisional visa.

Note: You must qualify for a GSM nomination in NT. This applies to both onshore and offshore applicants with pathways to nomination.

Qualifying for a GSM Visa [nominated by the NT government]

If you wish to be nominated by the NT government for a skilled visa, you must meet certain criteria:

  • Qualify for the Subclasses 190 or 491
  • Meet eligibility requirements stipulated by the NT government
  • Must live and work within your skilled occupation in the NT for at least three years

Subclass 491

The NT’s Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa allows you and your family members to live and work in the region for up to 5 years. With this visa, you might also qualify for the Subclass 191 PR (Skilled Regional) visa.

As a visa holder, you will need to report to the Department of Home Affairs and submit evidence that you have been living and working in NT. Federal officials may also conduct compliance checks to ensure you are still living and working in NT after being granted the visa.

Subclass 190

The Subclass 190 Skilled (Nominated) Visa allows NT-permitted nominees to live and work indefinitely in the region as permanent residents. However, the three-year living and working criteria apply here too. Typically, applicants who demonstrate their commitment to the NT and those who have lived in the NT for a long time are preferred for this visa option.
